Changing HBOOT w/out a PC

If you don’t have a windows computer, or prefer not to use a program like Android flasher there’s another way to flash your preferred HBOOT.

Please note you MUST BE S-OFF – click here to find out how.

From alpharev.nl, select the HBOOT of your choice (we recommend CM7R2) and download the PB99IMG version. Rename it and remove the suffix so it’s simply “PB99IMG.zip”. Copy it to the root directory of your SD card and boot your phone into fastboot (shut down, then hold power & volume down at the same time) and accept the update. Delete the PB99IMG.zip from your phone after you’ve confirmed that the HBOOT has taken. That’s it!!

TELSTRA DESIRE USERS READ BELOW

If you have a Telstra sourced Desire and you’ve never flashed a HBOOT before, the above method will not work for you at this point in time. Unfortunately because the Telstra desire is a slightly different model to the Desires shipped elsewhere in the world, it does make this just a touch trickier. The hardware is all the same as far as roms, hboots, etc but the phone id’s itself as a different model and the PB99IMG packages wont flash. So what do you do now? Well luckily we’ve packaged up a special version of our recommended CM7r2 hboot just for you!

Please keep in mind this will only work the first time you flash a custom hboot – once you’ve flashed one, your phone will then identify as a regular desire and you’ll no longer have this issue – you can simply use the regular HBOOT packages from alpharev.nl

CM7R2 HBOOT for Telstra Desire (811)

Further, if you have a special request for a particular hboot to be made compatible just leave a note in the comments – but we feel that CM7R2 is the best “universal” HBOOT for ROMS-Au at this point in time.

  1. Today i rooted and installed the same for a mate but had no end of trouble trying to flash the HBoot. Android Flasher for some reason has decided it no longer wants to work, after having used it successfully recently it no longer loads, neither on my win 7 64 or xp.
I could not for the life of me get hboot to flash from bootloader without pc.
This was my method, as it was the 1st time hboot had been flashed from stock telstra I:

    downloaded the zip file PB99IMG_cm7r2_telstra
    extracted it
renamed the hboot image file to PB99IMG.zip
placed that (PB99IMG.zip) on sd card
entered bootloader by holding volume down and power
bootloader loaded but did not seem recognise the PB99IMG.zip to update
    Am i doing something wrong?

Eventually i found Fastboot Commander which appears to be a java version of android flasher and it flashed hboot with no problems.. Happy Days

Is Fastboot Commander used extensively and has anyone else had problems with Android Flasher?

    • Your problem was extracting the zip, you just need to rename the original zip file.. no extraction at all! But yes, I’ve had issues with android flasher before… terminal is best, but only if you know the commands.

  2. Is it possible to make a Bravo Downgrader HBOOT for Telstra Desire? I used android flasher as i pointed out in my last post, so it didn’t work with your file to get the functionality of flashing hboot i fastboot. I guess it was because i already had cm7r2 hboot?

Should i rename your file the same as the original hboot file (PB99IMG.zip), or should i leave it like it is (PB99IMG_cm7r2_telstra.zip)?

    • Not a HBOOT downgrader, no, however I should be able to put together a package for the telstra froyo HBOOT. It’s something I hadn’t considered previously, it’s possible that the Telstra RUU won’t run as long as our device registers as A8181 (I’ve never tried, so can’t be sure).

Edit – Just looking at the RUU rom.zip, the hboot isn’t an .img like we normally use. However you should still be able to flash the RUU so long as you’re on a stock partition layout. It doesn’t check model ID in the same way as most packages.

      • Thank’s for the answer!

Don’t sweat it. It’ not that big of a deal, and if i do make the downgrade, i’ll use Android flasher again. it was just out of pure lazyness that i wanted to skip using the PC ;)

I want go back and forth with different hboot so it’s a one off.

        Thank’s anyway!

  3. Damn, should have read this before i started to mess around with Android Flasher. Even though it worked, i would have loved to just flash the damn hboot without using the pc.. go figure ;) Anyway, i got where i wanted.. i just took a bumpier road hehe. God tutorial by the way, i didn’t even know there was such a thing as diffrent versions of Desrire i never heard about Testra. I was loosing my mind trying to get things to work the way they supposed to, but now i know why.

    Thanks!

  4. Hi, I used revolutionary to get s-off and unrevoked 3 to get root access on my Telstra HTC Desire and it was all working fine, so I installed rom manager on my phone and then selected Leedroid to update. As soon as it finished downloading and installing my phone now gets stuck on the splash screen and when I enter the hboot menu (vol + -) it says missing or wrong img for something called PB99 and if I try to use the Telstra rom update program from the HTC site it wont flash back to the stock rom it came with because the phone is not being picked up by my pc (running win7 64bit) when I type abd devices into cmd (running SDK Manager). The goldcard I made with g-parted doesnt have a proper backup either. I swapped from CWM to AD Recovery 2 and it picks the sd card up on my pc and I can install roms etc but it just keeps freezing on the the first telstra splash screen. Can anyone help me?

    • 1 – Never use rom manager, ever
2 – You don’t need unrevoked after revolutionary, there’s a flashable zip on the revolutionary site that will give you root.
3 – Are you completely wiping the phone between rom flashes?
4 – Did you ever flash/try to flash a different hboot?

      • Can you please explain why “Never use rom manager, ever” ? I have been using ROM Manager without any issues at all. So I would like to know if there is a pitfall that is heading my way that I don’t know about. Cheers

        • Just because it doesn’t flash through a proper recovery, it’s always a soft recovery and I’ve had plenty of experiences with people having bad flashes from rom manager. I don’t really get what it makes easier either, if you want a great recovery plus control app then install 4EXT touch recovery and pay the $2 for the awesome control app.

  5. Thanks so much guys, worked perfectly for me, exactly what I needed (I have a Telstra Desire)!

  6. Never mind, I reckon it must have worked as I’ve installed Runnymede by Sebastian and it let me use the XD2SDX option so I must have installed CM7r2 (as the ROM installer checks this intself) but the HBOOT screen doesnt report that its CM7R2. Strange.

  7. I’ve S-off’d my Desire using the Revolution program then installed 4EXT, converted my ext3 into ext4 and loaded up Sebestian15′s Runnymede ROM without any problems. However I want more space so I want to change my HBOOT to CM7r2 but using the above method (telstra specific or alpharev) both give the same “invalid IMG” error.

    Any ideas?

  8. Thank you so much for this, the incorrect ID error was driving me nuts

  9. Thank you very much..

I have been trying to update using the AlphaRev files.. I figured something was up when I tried every single one of them and it still didn’t work…

After using your custom Hboot, Im now able to use the AlphaRev Files.

    :)

  10. this doesnt work for my telstra branded phone that is rooted s-off
