Choose your ROM

ROMS-Au is a “one stop shop” for anyone who wants to try alternative ROM’s on their Android phone.  We concentrate on the HTC Desire but this will change as more people move to the twin-core cpu phones.

This site provides an extensive knowledge base (accessed using the panel on the right, scroll down to see all the topics) which covers detailed step-by-step instructions for rooting your Android phone and installing one of our modified ROM’s.  The knowledge base also answers many FAQ’s and provides a technical reference on topics like a2SD, radio ROM options and Hboot alternatives.

Feel free to try these ROM’s – we’re sure you’ll find something you like, and the support is first class!  You can ask questions here, but most ROM’s have a support forum on Whirlpool and there are more people on Whirlpool who will help you.  Whirlpool links are on each ROM page, click on an image below or scroll down for a brief description of each ROM.

When you are ready to trial a new ROM, follow our step by step instructions on ROM Installation.

Available ROM’s

MIUI_Au
[HTC Desire only.  MIUI is a radical ROM developed by a very talented group of Chinese modders. MIUI_Au is only for the HTC Desire, but there are also versions available for many other phones.  It is compiled from Cyanogen/Google source code (heavily modified by the Chinese developers).  It has a similar look to the iPhone (iOS) but its still Android.  As MIUI is NOT based on HTC Sense UI it is quite a different feeling after using a standard HTC Desire, but it does have a lot of similarities to Sense UI.  MIUI is very different, so if you try it, give it a week or so to get used to it. MIUI supports themeing so it doesn't have to look like an iPhone thank god.]
Villain_Au
[HTC Desire only. Villain_Au is based on GingerVillain by Richard Tripp.  It is GingerBread 2.3.4 AOSP, and is known for its stability, speed, low battery use and wide range of features, but it is quite different to HTC Sense in the original HTC ROM.  If you are chasing best possible battery performance, Villain_Au and T-Mod Express are the best options]
InsertCoin_Oz
[HTC Desire only. InsertCoin_Oz is based on InsertCoin by Baadnwz.  It is Sense based so offers the closest experience to a standard HTC Desire, but it has all the advantages of Gingerbread, with many Sense 3 inclusions]
T-Mod Express
[HTC Desire only. T-Mod Express is based on Oxygen by AdamG.  It is compiled directly from AOSP source and the project's aim is to build a light, speedy, bug-free full featured ROM. T-Mod Express is exactly that and its well worth a look.  Battery performance is very good.]
RCMix_Oz
[HTC Desire only. RCMix_Oz is based on RCMix by Robocik.  It is Sense based so, like InsertCoin_Oz offers the closest experience to a standard HTC Desire, but it has all the advantages of Gingerbread, with many Sense 3 inclusions.  RCMix is VERY similar to InsertCoin - Robocik does a lot of thorough testing and RCMix has been traditionally a bit more stable, although now that things have settled a lot InsertCoin is also very stable - take your pick!]
T-Mod
[HTC Desire and Wildfire. Roms-au has taken over support for the very popular T-Mod ROM.  We wish to acknowledge the work put in by Muskie who really started the Australian ROM modding community with his original T-Mod port of Modaco and Lee Bailey's LeeDrOid.]
ICS-Au
[HTC Desire only. A true ICS rom for your Desire! This is pure Android at it's best.]

  1. Hi, I was really liking mr insanes desire ics rom. but if you reboot it after a day it gets stuck in a bootloop. pretty annoying when you’ve just got everything set up to your liking :(

    • just saw the fix in the ics rom comments. will give this a try. it’s a bit annoying that this is a known problem and the rom hasn’t been re-packaged already. but thanks all the same mrinsane. I like this rom the most out of anyone I’ve tried so far. it runs smoother the any of the jellyb roms i’ve tried.

  2. the links for ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386-HTCROOT.iso on the Rooting page are broken. Does anyone have this file that they can upload it somewhere?

    Thanks

  3. Hey, any chance you guys could make a few for the Motorola Razr Tx910?

  4. Try as I may I cannot seem to get apps to install into ext3 partition. I install apps and it shows on the storage as internal and sure enough I run out of space.
I have installed unrevoked and revolutionary, from phone recovery I have wiped, formatted and partitioned.
Using Gparted via Ubunto 11.10 I cannot seem to format the whole SD card (no access to the SD ext3 partition)

I have tried a couple of ROMs (LeeDroids A2SD and also Data, Gingerbread, Cyanogen Mod7) – they all worked, though best was A2SD.
I cannot install past the 148M point.
Any ideas of what I am doing wrong?

    • It sounds like your problem is getting the SD-EXT partition set up. It’s normal that you can’t see the EXT partition via the phone/windows. I’d have a look at the setting up A2SD guide on here and let us know if you continue to have problems :)

  5. This is a Great site,
Thanks for all the info and time you have put in.
My HTC desire is cool again now I have Android 2.3 and more internal space (ext3 partition)

I’m in New Zealand on 2 degrees and used the Villan_Au ROM, it works brilliantly. Only small issue so far is there is no email (not gmail) widget. No problem really. The UI is snappy and very stable.

I needed to flash with clockwork in Ubuntu (windows 7 would not work)
Also I couldn’t read my micro SD drive in Gparted via USB/Phone, needed to put it into a micro SD adapter. Completed this in two evenings only because I needed to restore to partition

  6. Has anyone else tried T-Mod on the Wildfire?

  7. I have a Desire A8181 which has been rooted and now running Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 Ver. GWK74. (I used the Revolutionary site and followed their instructions.).

I have not yet partitioned the drive to get an EXT3 but that is the next task.

I am in NZ. Do the AU Roms work seamlessly for here or are they heavily customised for AU?

    • Our ROMS have the largest possible set of APN’s and should work fine in NZ. I travel to NZ fairly often and have never had any problems with Vodaphone or 2 Degrees

  8. hi
please u create a rom for htc wildfire

    thanks

  9. Hi, just wanted to check that the Desire roms will also work on a Desire HD, or do I need different roms for this?

Thanks for the help and sorry for the noob question.

    Anthony

    • Hi Anthony,
Unfortunately they are 2 different devices – so you’ll need to track something down that’s specifically designed for the HD.

      Cheers,
      Matt

  10. Hello guys,

We admire the great work you guys are doing on this site and the ROMs. I’m from Maxthon, a company that develops world-class browsers and many other popular web properties. We’re creating an area where we feature many popular ROMs. We’d like to ask if you guys are interested in being featured (free of charge, of course).

Please send me an email if you guys are interested. Thanks much…

    Eric

    • Well you learn something every day. I had never heard of the Maxthon Browser before this post.
Sure Eric, happy to have you link to our site.

  11. did u see http://www.htcdev.com. there is now a bootloader unlocking service provided by HTC.

    • DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT Unlock ur boootloader using htc online toool!!! it will void ur warrrenty automaticlly, they take ur phone s/n then the go to ur acount and mark ur phone as unlocked therefore u cannot exchange it if something goes wrong,,,,,,you have been warnedddd

      • Sorry, but I think you are wrong. plenty telstra mod out there, that return your phone as Telstra sold it to you Check SDK developer, do not take my word for it. You are very welcome to keep your droid unsecure and with no to permission root which means you will not be able to install a firewall nor deny permission in sending out private information
your android phone is broadcasting all your info to every Tom dick and Henry out there.
I just purchased legitimate AVG antivirus and allowing, basically now AVG have permission to check all my private information. I do not care as I do not have anything to hide but it’s just a principle with out S-off your phone is not secure,

      • Don’t use the HTC Bootloader unlocker. if you’ve got a telstra bravo use unrevoked 2.32! not 2.33 to unlock and amon-ra custom recovery .img (you’ll have to download seperately and select use custom image option). I used the HTC bootloader unlocker, got there eventually but HTC give you a wrong command to get your unlock key that is bloody infuriating. I forget what exactly it was but they specify one word on the end and if you leave that off it works. problem with that is that you end up with a 1.03 bootloader
